City gates

The original layout of the medieval city had four access gates to the town oriented towards the cardinal points: Santa María to the north, Estella to the east, La Solana to the south, and San Felices, through which work began, to the west.

In the 16th century, they were modified and decorated with coats of arms and saints.

In the 17th century, two new portals were opened in the wall: San Miguel, close to San Felices, and Trinidad, at the other end of the walled enclosure, at the mouth of Calle Algarrada, to replace Estella´s, blinded after the habilitation of Plaza del Coso.

Currently, five of these remain: the one in La Solana, the portal through which Cesare Borgia left before being shot down in the ambush that ended his life, the ones in San Felices and San Miguel, the one in San Juan, which leads directly to Plaza de los Fueros and Plaza de la Trinidad.
