San Pablo’s Church was the church of the homonymous Dominican convent founded in 1276 by the wife of Alfonso X el Sabio, Violante de Aragón. Place of royal funerals and baptisms such as those of Enrique IV and Philip II.

This Gothic temple was rebuilt in the 15th century by Juan de Torquemada, converting it into a large Gothic building with a single high nave, transept and three apses.

The façade is the most relevant part of the building due to its spectacular nature, one of the great jewels of Hispano-Flemish Gothic.

In 1601 Francisco de Rojas y Sandoval, Duke of Lerma, acquired the patronage of the convent with the purpose of emulating the work of El Escorial and as a burial place.
