Arab Cistern

The Castellnovo cistern, built by the Arabs around the 12th century, is one of the best examples of Islamic hydraulic engineering in the Alto Palancia region.

The cistern was designed taking advantage of the unevenness of the terrain. The entire complex was later covered, forming a replacement, within the walls of the town, where the rim and access to the water enclosure are located.

The well, about 8 meters in diameter and about 10.5 meters deep, is accessed by a steep stone-slab staircase. Next to it there is a small chamber, formed by a semicircular vault attached to the wall. Close to the well there is a basin in the shape of an arch for the service of filling vessels and jugs.

The interior of the tank was covered several times with lime mortar to protect, clean up and prevent leaks.

Next to the cistern you can see part of the walled enclosure of the town. It is believed that he had communication with the castle

The cistern has provided service until the middle of the 20th century. The night watchman was in charge the doors opening as well as  monitoring the service.
